The Indian mango calendar in the US
Alphonso (Maharashtra): late March–early June. Sabse premium, sabse mehngi — $50–$80 per dozen for a top box.
Kesar (Gujarat): May–July. Slightly cheaper, deeply aromatic, mera personal favorite.
Chausa aur Dussehri (UP): July–August. Late-season, juicy, aamras banane ke liye best.
Banganapalli / Badami (Andhra/Karnataka): April–May. Firmer, slice karne ke liye acchi.
Fresh vs frozen — the honest tradeoff
Fresh Indian mangoes US mein FDA irradiation ke through aati hain — safe hain, but slight texture change hota hai. Timing bhi tricky — box khulne ke 3–5 din mein khaana padta hai.
Frozen mango pulp (Deep, Swad, Ratna brands ka Alphonso/Kesar pulp) year-round available hai. Aamras, mango lassi, mango kulfi ke liye equally good. Fresh se sirf whole eating experience miss karte ho.
Aamras — the simplest, most divine recipe
1 can (850g) Kesar pulp, 1/4 cup thanda dudh, 1/2 tsp elaichi powder, chutki bhar jaiphal (nutmeg), 2 tbsp cheeni (optional — pulp usually sweet enough hoti hai). Whisk karo, chill karo, poori ke saath serve karo.
Yeh Gujarati summer Sunday lunch ka signature hai. Wisconsin mein bhi same magic — bas AC on karke poori khaane wali garmi ka feel imagine karo.
Mango lassi — restaurant se better ghar pe
1 cup Wisconsin whole milk yogurt (Fage, Chobani, ya Indian brand jaisa Nanak), 1/2 cup Kesar pulp, 1/4 cup milk, 2 tbsp cheeni, chutki elaichi, 3 ice cubes. Blend 30 second. Done.
Restaurant mein pate ho $5.99 mein — ghar pe $1.50 mein bana lo aur better taste karega.
