Two festivals, one day
January 14–15 ko pura India harvest celebrate karta hai — Tamil Nadu Pongal manata hai, North India Makar Sankranti (Uttarayan Gujarat mein), Karnataka Ellu Birodhu, Punjab Lohri (13th ko), Andhra bhi Sankranti.
Fox Valley mein South Indian families kaafi grow hui hain, so Pongal celebrations bhi ab Appleton area mein hone lagi hain.
Sakkarai Pongal — the sweet Pongal recipe
1 cup raw rice, 1/4 cup moong dal (dry roasted), 1.5 cup jaggery, 3 cup water, 1 cup milk, 1/4 cup ghee, cashews, kismis, elaichi powder, chutki jaiphal.
Rice aur dal ko paani mein pressure cooker mein 3 whistle. Alag pan mein jaggery + thoda paani melt karo, syrup bana lo. Cooked rice-dal mein jaggery syrup, milk, ghee daalo. Cashew-kismis ko ghee mein tadka karke upar daalo. Elaichi + jaiphal for finish. Serve on banana leaf if you have one — Fox Valley Bazaar mein hum frozen banana leaves rakhne wale hain.
Ven Pongal — the savory sibling
Same rice-dal base, but sweetener nahi. Instead: black pepper crushed, jeera, adrak, curry patta, cashews — sab ghee mein tadka. Coconut chutney aur sambhar ke saath.
Sunday breakfast Wisconsin winter mein — this hits different.
Ellu bella & til ladoo (Sankranti staples)
Karnataka: Ellu bella — sesame seeds, jaggery, roasted peanuts, copra (dry coconut), fried gram — all mixed dry, distributed to neighbors saying 'ellu bella tindu olle maathadi' (eat this sweet mix and speak sweet words).
North India: Til ke ladoo — white sesame + jaggery, warm-hand-formed balls. Winter mein til body warmth deta hai. Wisconsin January mein basically Ayurvedic seasonal medicine.
Uttarayan patang — Gujarat's kite festival
Gujarati families Uttarayan (14 Jan) ko chhat pe kite fly karti hain 'Kai Po Che!' shout ke saath. Wisconsin January mein rooftop bilkul possible nahi (snow + wind + 15°F), so bahut sari families spring mein simulate karti hain, ya indoor decoration + kite-themed dinner rakhti hain.
Ganne (sugarcane), til-gud chikki, undhiyu (mixed vegetable), aur puri-shrikhand — traditional Uttarayan lunch.

January 1st week se stock: jaggery (organic aur regular), raw rice varieties (ponni, sona masuri), white aur black til, moong dal, banana leaves (frozen), ready sakkarai pongal mix (MTR), ready til ladoo (Haldiram, Bikaji), aur ganne juice pack (fresh unavailable Wisconsin winter mein).
Interest list mein 'Pongal' ya 'Sankranti' mention karo — hum South Indian aur Gujarati community-specific stocking prioritize karenge.
